10 waxing tips to prevent your clients from running to your competitors

It can be easy to get stuck in routine when performing the same wax treatments multiple times per day. In such a competitive industry it’s important to regularly review your process, update training for yourself or your staff, and improve your treatments in order to keep the quality of your service high and your clients coming back.

At Professional Beauty London 2019, the people behind the brands you use in your salon will be on-hand to help you do just that. You can visit their stands for free advice from their top ambassadors and experts, try new products under their guidance, understand how you can make more money from your waxing and ask for support on how to make your treatments the best they can be.

Waxing brands you can meet at ExCeL London on 24-25 February will include Ashmira Botanica, Cirépil by Perron Rigot, Hive, Lycon UK, Wax:One, Waxu and WaxXXX.

On stand W18, Ashmira Botanica’s Director, Tracey Smith, will be showcasing the brand’s new after-care solutions and looking for models to try their latest waxes. Tracey also has some important do’s and don’ts to help improve your wax treatments:

  • Don’t forget to do a full consultation with your client – has their medication changed? Are they using skincare containing retinol or a high level of Vitamin A, which can make the skin thinner and more sensitive? Are they allergic to sticking plasters, pine or tree nuts such as macadamia, hazelnut, shea butter or cacao?
  • Can’t change towels in between clients? Then do use a fresh piece of white couch roll per client.
  • Do help your clients feel clean and fresh before their wax by giving them an individual wipe.
  • Do prep the area properly. Do you pre-wax? And does your pre-wax remove all traces of make-up, deodorant and cream to make sure the wax adheres properly to the hairs and removes every last one?
  • Do make sure your client is comfortable. Are they comfortable with how much of them you are revealing when you wax them? Particularly on a first wax. Some people are quite shy and you need to take this into account.
  • Don’t double dip your spatulas – waxing one client’s bikini line followed by another client’s face doesn’t bode well!
  • Don’t blow on your spatula to cool it down!
  • Don’t pluck or pick your peelable wax off your client’s bikini line! Most people say that’s the bit that hurts most!
  • Do look after your client’s skin. Do you use products to cool sensitive skin after waxing? Do you apply oil to make sure every last bit of wax and stickiness has been removed?
  • Do give your client post-waxing advice. If you notice they have ingrown hairs tell them how to get rid of them and how to prevent them.
